Abstract
With the aid of a case study at X (anonymized) the following research question will be examined: “What are the direct and indirect effects of management control systems (hereinafter: MCS) and the quality of working life (hereinafter: QWL) on organizational learning (hereinafter: OL) at X?” With the aid of characteristics from New Public Management (hereinafter: NPM), a typology of MCS will unfold which should fit the nature of the activities at X. Furthermore, QWL, contributes integral feedback about the current status quo at X. The last variable, OL, is operationalized from single-loop learning to double loop learning and to Model I and Model II learning climate. Moreover, there are (in)direct effects between this thesis’ main variables. The MCS in place is of a routine type of control, due to NPM. Besides, having examined QWL, there is a separation in opinions depending on the seniority of the employee regarding working years at X: The more senior employees perceive a low QWL and vice versa for the less senior employees. Additionally, X exhibits single-loop learning processes and a Model I learning climate. Lastly, future research should elaborate more on the challenging and extensive (in)direct effects between this thesis’ main variables.
