This thesis is about how educational games produce awareness and sensitivity about the people that cross borders amongst secondary school pupils in the Netherlands. The rising anti-immigrant climate in Europe, and the fact that unreliable news from social media is becoming the main information source for secondary school pupils, make it important to educate this generation on migration-related topics. The thesis uses a postcolonial lens, meaning that this thesis not only focuses on the way educational games produce awareness and sensitivity but also on how the labels that are used to describe the people that cross borders influence pupils’ perception. The labels that are most often used to describe the people that cross borders are ‘refugee’ and ‘migrant’. The research is based on literature research, questionnaires and observations of in-class discussions. This thesis shows that it is important to educate secondary school pupils about the people that cross borders, since they often do not know a lot about migration-related topics, and education on forced migration is not mandatory. Furthermore, it is important to overcome the humanitarian narrative that is often present in education materials on the people that cross borders.en_US
