Abstract
Innovation is an important theme within current European and Dutch policy. The withdrawal of the mass production of labour intensive goods forces the European industries to be innovative in order to maintain a prosperous economy. In the Netherlands this policy is captured by the document “Pieken in de Delta”, in English “Peaks in the Delta”. This documents points out a few regions where innovation is taking place. One of these regions is the region of Wageningen which is known for its University and Research Centrum (WUR). The WUR specializes in life sciences and natural resources. This University is surrounded by a few knowledge intensive companies, which are active in de food industry. These companies, the University and other institutions are referred to as “Food Valley”. The government tries to achieve innovation in Wageningen by stimulating the cooperation between institutions (o.a university) and companies. The main question of this thesis is: How did the agro cluster in Wageningen develop, how does it function, and what is role of innovation policy in this process?
