Abstract
There exists a variety of team decision support methods that aim to support groups in taking decisions about analytically complex problems. A number of case, impact, and review studies are available for these methods. This thesis adds to the study of team decision support methods by providing a problematizing review of two such methods, namely Participatory Scenario Development (PSD) and Group Causal Mapping (GCM). With reference to a reading of background texts in neighbouring disciplines and philosophy of science, we identified seventeen assumptions underlying these methods (ten in PSD, seven in GCM). We selected four assumptions in PSD for problematization, resulting in the formulation of two alternative assumptions; “Analytical Trump Card” and “The Expanded Mosaic View of Knowledge”. We selected two assumptions in GCM for problematization, resulting in the formulation of one alternative assumption: “The Versatile Embedded Actor”. By identifying, problematizing, and providing alternatives to assumptions embedded in PSD and GCM, this thesis provides a theoretically sophisticated point of departure for the further development of these methods.
