dc.description.abstract | With Transit Oriented Development (TOD) high density, mixed use developments are planned around transit stations. Green Urbanism is an umbrella term of environmentally friendly city planning. In Green-TOD, these two concepts are combined. This combination can create synergies that yield environmental benefits beyond the sum of what TOD and green urbanism offer individually (Cervero & Sullivan, 2011, p. 210) In this bachelorthesis is examined to what extend the principles of Green-TOD are applied in Dutch Railway areas, by answering the following research question: To what extend is the Green-TOD model of Cervero & Sullivan (2011) applied in Dutch railway areas? In order to answer this question, case studies have been conducted at the railway station areas of Rotterdam Centraal and Breda Centraal. The selected railway areas are analysed on the following Green-TOD dimensions: ‘modalities, ‘walkability’, ‘mix of urban functions’, ‘high densities’, ‘waste management’, ‘greenery’, ‘water’ and ‘energy’. These case studies made clear that railway areas in the Netherlands are already relatively sustainable on the dimensions ‘modalities’, ‘energy’ and ‘mix of urban functions’. The largest improvements are possible on the dimension ‘waste management’. The application of Green-TOD is probably even less evident outside of the “big six” railway areas of the Netherlands. | en_US |
