dc.description.abstract | This research aimed to investigate how quantitative Product Life Cycle (PLC) Tools can support strategic decision-making (SDM), as well as its potential support for hospitals in particular in SDM aimed at the prevention of negative social and environmental impact of the use of medical products, which has not been extensively investigated yet. This research further aimed to contribute to the literature regarding how to effectively combine multiple stakeholder insights for effective SDM. This research added to the body of knowledge regarding the combination of PLC and SDM by conducting a case study performed at the Radboudumc. By applying a qualitative research method including semi-structured interviews and a focus group using a step-by-step approach based on a unique combination of the SDM and PLC-tool steps this research showed the importance of following this procedure for effective SDM in the hospital sector. Results provided evidence that PLC-tools can be supportive for SDM but also showed that quantitative PLC-tools are not purely supportive of nature. The complex hospital environment in combination with the difficulty of the use of PLC-tools made people question whether the hospital (sector) and its relevant stakeholders are ready (yet). By combining multiple stakeholder perspectives, this research established that general SDM-related means such as stakeholder engagement, responsibility, and clarity regarding personal sphere of influence were perceived as crucial for effective SDM in the hospital sector in order for PLC-tools to be supportive. | |
