Abstract

Communities of Practice (CoPs) are well-known as facilitators of learning by way of shared practice and knowledge creation sharing in organisations which makes them useful in tackling rapid change in the environment. Traditionally derived from work in industrial organisations, research into CoPs and how they manifest in the context of the post-industrial organisation was lacking. An exploratory multi-case study was conducted with semi-structured interviews and documentary analysis. This study found evidence of CoPs being present in post-industrial organisations. However, not all characteristics were applicable. Notable outcomes include the negative impact of extensive telecommuting on CoP participation, a focus in CoPs on sharing experiences over knowledge on practice, and the minor presence and positive effect of reflective practices in the CoP.
