Abstract
This thesis attempts to shed light on the existence of tourism in the ancient world. To do so, it examines the various methods of travel in and around Greece of the second century, divided into three connected yet distinct forms: cultural, sports, and religious, which are each compared to a set definition of tourism. This thesis posits that tourism was indeed present, though in a more limited form, concluding that tourist travel was, in the vast majority of cases, dominated by the upper-class and undertaken for the purposes of the fulfillment of a personal desire, often connected to a secondary motive outside of pure leisure or entertainment.
