Abstract

This study investigates the impact of AI adoption in the business model on firm performance for high- and low-tech organizations. The aim of this study is to investigate whether higher levels of AI adoption in the business model would lead to higher levels of firm performance and to examine whether this relationship is different for high- and low-tech organizations. This study analyzed 74 Dutch SME’s by using multiple regression analysis and moderation analysis in SPSS to statistically validate the proposed hypotheses. The findings of this study highlight that higher levels of AI adoption in the business model do not lead to significantly higher levels of firm performance and that this relationship is not different for high- and low-tech organizations. With these findings this study contradicts prior research and calls for a more nuanced understanding of the performance implications of AI adoption. Complementary investments, contextual factors and organizational factors are potential determinants for the success of AI and this study strongly recommends to assess the organizational readiness for AI adoption before investing and implementing.
