In recent years, there is a rise in collaborations, in the form of organizations, addressing societal and environmental issues. Such organizations are community-based and place-based, addressing wicked problems related to sustainability on a (supra) local scale. Collaboration in these place-based communities involves formulation and implementation of deliberate strategic collaboration plans and is influenced by contextual elements. The focus of this exploratory, qualitative study is towards the contextual drivers of the partnership formation and strategic decision making process in 12 place-based communities (that address wicked problems in the Netherlands). By performing a comparative case study, this study formulates a defined list of contextual factors and underlying drivers that influence the partnership formation and strategic decision making process in place-based communities in the Netherlands. In doing so, this provides theoretical contributions to the applied theoretical concepts and practical relevance for (aspiring) place-based communities and other (likeminded) organizational forms.en_US
