This research establishes a conceptual framework for considering public space a social phenomenon which is an emergent property of practices. Drawing on literature beyond the field of human geography, this research argues that public space is a complex phenomenon which is a product of socio-political interactions and negotiations over the urban realm. The emergence of public space arises as a twofold: first, public space space is a social phenomenon because it emerges in the interaction between practices and other practices or material arrangements, and secondly it is a political phenomenon because of the political dimension of the relations that are held between practices. These relations between practices, e.g. practice of urban planning and city-dwelling, occurred in an antagonistic level. This conceptual framework is applied in a case study in Sportheldenbuurt, Amsterdam. Within the case study the socio-political dynamics that occur in public spaces of the area are discussed. The research concludes that public space emerges in the complexity of intentional and unintentional practices, in which practices may react intentionally to other practices.en_US
