Abstract

Recent attention has been brought to the topic of Indonesian migration. From the post-war exile of Moluccans Indonesians to the forced departure of Indonesians under the new Soeharto regime, more academics published works on these groups of people. This thesis follows this trend, as it focuses on the Indonesian diasporas of the United States and the Netherlands in the 1950s to 1970s, with the ultimate objective of understanding how the acculturation process in each country might affect the diaspora differently. Through historical sources, the thesis attempts to understand the experiences of these people who find themselves in a foreign place, namely how they interact with the environment they find themselves in and how they are shaped by it. Through the research process, an understanding is reached that this is not a simple binary comparison between the two diaspora groups owing to the complex history of post-revolutionary era Indonesia.
