Abstract

This essay examines how the GenZ Bible reinterprets traditional religious narratives within the context of digital discourse and meme culture. Focusing on both the book of the GenZ Bible and the TikTok videos posted by social media users, the study investigates how contemporary youth use humor, irony, and sincerity to engage with sacred texts in a way that is emotionally powerful and culturally relevant. Drawing on metamodernist theory, semiotics, and digital discourse analysis, the essay explores how symbolic meaning is constructed through visual elements, language, and internet memes, such as ‘POV’, voiceovers, and emojis. The GenZ Bible represents a metamodern attitude that embraces ambiguity, reflexivity, and emotional depth. It illustrates how spiritual content can be reimagined to maintain its significance in a post-ironic, highly mediated age—where truth and authenticity are no longer fixed, but deeply felt and performed. This essay explores the emotional and symbolic layers of the GenZ Bible through a metamodern lens, focusing on its use of irony, sincerity, and digital language. Across the three chapters, my research analyzes the interplay between religious history, performative storytelling, and the visual aesthetics of TikTok.
