dc.description.abstract | This thesis researches the quality of the urban design of public space of urban waterfront developments in the Netherlands and examines the differences in urban design of public space between organic and integral area developments. It is a multiple case study, with seven cases. These are situated in the Dutch cities Nijmegen, Amsterdam and Rotterdam. Firstly, the different design factors which contribute to successfully designed public space are examined. Then, the main differences between organic and integral area development are looked into. The quality of the urban design of the public space of the selected cases is discussed next. Lastly, a comparison is made between the quality of urban design of public space of organic area developments and integral area developments. This thesis shows that the choice for an integral way of area development results in a different quality of urban design of public space. The selected cases within this thesis which were developed in an integral way have a higher quality of urban design in comparison with the cases developed in an organic way. A possible explanation for this lays in the unclarity with organic development who is responsible for public goods like public space | en_US |
