Abstract

This project analyses the relationship between artists and autonomous systems as a crucial example of the active role of software in terms of creative process rather than profit, commodification, or users’ manipulation. The recognition of this mutual shaping allows analysing the materiality of code during the creative process regardless of the medium or technique in generative art practices. Relying on this theoretical framework and the findings I collected as assistant researcher, this ethnographic project asks to what extent generative art is a way to visualise the materiality of code through its variety of tools and techniques. Focussing on Hello World! group exhibition, this research aims to explore the relationship between artists and software in terms of mutual shaping rather than command-control, opening the question as to how art production can offer a starting point to question the daily use of these technologies in cultural and social terms.
