Abstract

An in-depth analysis on how the palatine city Madinat al-Zahra and its gardens were connected to the establishment of the Caliphate of Córdoba (929 - 1031) and Abd al-Rahman III's (r. 929 - 961) claim to the title of caliph. The research connects the socio-political developments of the tenth century of the Dar al-Islam to the symbolism of monumental constructions and the meaning of gardens within Islamic culture. This study brings together; politics, architecture, garden-design and religion in order to create a better understanding of the creation of the Caliphate of Córdoba and the figure of Abd al-Rahman III.
