Abstract

Conceptual knowledge has been suggested to be represented in sparse networks of 'concept cells' in the medial tempora! lobe (MTL), following the discovery of cells that selectively fire in response to a single concept in a modality-invariant manner, e.g. different pictures of Jennifer Aniston. Here we aim to probe these distributed small-scale ensembles of concept representations using high-field ±MRI at 7-Tesla and Representational Similarity Analysis. Subjects viewed pictures of four categories (faces, animals, objects & scenes) belonging to one oftwo superordinate concepts (the fantasy worlds of Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings). We tested representational content on both the categorical and the conceptual level using univariate and multivariate methods. We found evidence for distributed category representations along the ventral visual stream and limited evidence for an involvement of the perirhinal cortex in the representation of conceptual knowledge.
