Abstract
Apart from the influence Dampier's writings have had on multiple disciplines such as navigation, topography, astronomy, biology, terminology, meteorology, botany, cartography, natural history, culture and literature, William Dampier's travel journals show signs of early modern, nationalistic tendencies. In this way Dampier's journals support Manuel DeLanda's thesis in which the latter places the phenomenon of nationalism in an earlier age than generally assumed. This paper takes in account the influence of piracy and the role of privateers as agents or transmitters of new ideas like nationalism.
