Abstract

This master thesis investigates how the digital transformation adoption stage of an organization shapes supply chain performance and discovers to what extent corporate governance mediates this relationship. Through the lens of the resource-based view, it posits that digital technologies are strategic assets when supported by effective governance structures. To test this, a panel of 169 U.S.-listed firms over 2018-2022 was composed. Digital transformation adoption stages were derived from a text-mining lexicon applied to annual reports, the corporate governance level within an organization was captured via a composite index of board characteristics, and supply chain performance was measured with an entropy method consisting of financial and operational metrics. Executing linear mixed effects models alongside a bootstrapped mediation analysis, the study concludes that digital transformation on its own does not directly enhance supply chain performance or influence corporate governance levels. Rather, it yields supply chain performance gains just indirectly, through its influence on corporate governance. The findings refine the resource-based view by specifying corporate governance as a dynamic orchestration mechanism that stimulates digitalization and offers managers guidance: investments in digitalization must be embedded within tailored governance frameworks to positively influence supply chain agility, resilience and sustainability.
