Abstract

Frames can be created by selective choice of words, descriptions, quotations and characteristic examples. News stories of the mass sexual assaults on New Year’s Eve in Germany has led to controversy about framing asylum seekers in European and particularly German news. In the present study 40 quality newspaper stories (20 Dutch-20 German) 40 sensational newspaper stories (20 Dutch-20 German) have been analyzed in a deductive framework. The aim of this study was to find how frames were used to report on the mass sexual events in Cologne, Germany in quality and sensational newspapers and whether there was a cross-national difference in the use of frames. A significant relation was found in the morality frame and the nature of the newspaper (quality – sensational). Qualitative newspapers used more frequently the morality frame than sensational newspapers. No significant differences were found between nationality of the newspaper and the use of frames.
