Abstract
As more robots are integrated into real-life settings, it is important to tailor a robot to the needs of its operational context. The specific robot this research revolves around is a hospital robot that transports laboratory samples. As the hospital is a multi-cultural space with visitors of all ages, a broad public needs to be able to understand this robot. An opportunity lies in the usage of Semantic Free Utterances, but how do people of all ages, especially elderly, perceive those? In this thesis, the influence of age, perceived human- or robot-likeness, and dataset on the ability to recognize different emotions from Semantic Free Utterances was investigated. The results of two experiments indicate that the emotion recognition ability declines with age, and that ageing affects individual emotions differently. Better emotion recognition rates were found for sounds that were perceived as more human-like, as well as sounds from a database with more human-like stimuli.
