Abstract
To counter the general and academic exclusion of Black girls , this thesis will answer the
research question: in what ways have Black Girls been involved in resistance during slavery,
the Civil Rights Movement, and the contemporary moment, and can commonalities be found?
It will do so by combining secondary sources that often feature primary sources concerning
Black girl resistance with a close reading of literary works like slave narratives and
contemporary poems. This paper will reveal similarities across these three different time and
political periods in how Blac k girls have resisted both overtly and covertly and what they
have had to resist against, including but not limited to dehumanization, sexual objectification,
and repressive stereotypes and ideologies like respectability politics
