The Soviet Union had religious policy that impacted religious denominations differently and was often implemented differently per region as well. This thesis combines prior research on the religious policy for Islam in Central Asia and the Russian Orthodox Church with a specific focus on the institutions that were setup to overlook religion and comparing how they impacted the Russian Orthodox Church and Islam in Central Asia. This comparison serves to further our understanding of Islam in Central Asia and how it was influenced by its Soviet past.
