dc.description.abstract | Since several planetary boundaries are overstepped, different governance actors are obliged to take responsibility and reduce their environmental footprint. For the market this is reflected in CSR, a concept which has experienced increasing relevance over the last few decades. The underlying rationale for companies to practice CSR can differ. This research ought to identify motivations for companies to be actively engaged with sustainability in their business model, by means of a case study for the Dutch retailer Prénatal and its suppliers. Most suppliers are textile- and garment producers with cross-border supply chains which mainly go through countries in the Global South. Through a mixed method approach (survey N =167, interviews N = 7) there have been identified two dominant motivations: ethical and economic. The former one being an intrinsic motivation and the latter one developing by means of market trends and price upcharges. These ethically motivated suppliers are in general harder to influence and incentivised to produce more sustainably, while the economically motivated ones are easier to persuade to do so. The size of the supplier, their production countries and their current sustainability policies do not seem to have a significant effect on their CSR level. Key words: corporate social responsibility (CSR), sustainable suppliers, incentives, motivations, textile- and garment industry | en_US |
