Abstract

The master thesis investigates the development of the covers of romantic novels. During the 1980s there was a large increase in this genre. It has always been one of the most popular genres, but during this decade, the popularity increased even more. In this period, the covers of those books were very extravagant. They often featured characters who were half-dressed and who were intimately embracing each other. After the 1980s, this style became less popular, and other designs took over. When you walk into the bookstore nowadays, you see the newest style, namely the cartoon cover. This style is a lot more simplistic than the one from the 1980s, and is not as dramatic. This thesis will investigate the why this change took place with the help of the works by Gérard Genette, Nicole Matthews and Nickianne Moody.
