Abstract
When poor people are member of an organization it will positively affect their income and wellbeing.
With this assumption in mind the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs backs several Dutch
organizations in their support of other member-based organizations with the aim of reducing
poverty in developing countries. Previous research has not produced clear results regarding the
relation between member-based organizations and poverty reduction, as some studies show an
effect and some studies do not. This thesis argues that an enabling environment can positively
influence the role member-based organizations can have in reducing poverty. With several
regression tests and a fixed effects model encompassing 38 countries over a time period ranging
from 1995 to 2014, the effect of an enabling environment on the relation between member-based
organizations and poverty reduction is assessed. The main result is that there are no effects found
of the influence of member-based organizations on poverty reduction, or of contextual factors that
impact this relation.
