Abstract

The present study aims to demonstrate the differences and similarities between Haddad (2013) and Fritsch (2018) in their interpretation of Derridean inheritance, the gift and friendship. Both authors base their own theories on these concepts, but use them in different fields. Where Haddad (2013) utilizes these concepts to demonstrate a fundamental reciprocity between democratic systems and legacies, Fritsch (2018) argues that the same concepts can be deployed to reinterpret the way we view ecology in respect to intergenerational justice. Although their respective conceptions of Derridean inheritance, the gift and friendship largely overlap, their understanding of temporality and unity in these notions seems to differ. This thesis therefore seeks to investigate these differences, in order to demonstrate diversity in Derridean legacies.
