Abstract

Adapting one's communication style can result in various benefits for a speaker, especially in prestigious social situations such as job interviews. One frequently covered research area, communication accommodation theory (CAT), predicts social and interpersonal benefits when converging one's communication style towards another person's. Culture is another area of influence impacting the way people communicate. Cultural theories, such as Hofstede's, show that some cultural dimensions indicate communication preferences between genders, e.g., masculinity dimension. The present study investigates the potential link between communicative convergence & maintenance, as defined via CAT, and perceptions of communicatively accommodating men across masculine and feminine cultures. A survey investigated the perceptions of Dutch and German-cultured participants on an in-group member using either a convergent or a maintaining accommodation style in an interview setting. The results revealed no differences between the speech accommodation conditions but did show that German participants perceived the German candidate as more likable overall.
