| dc.description.abstract | Black people remain marginalized in contemporary United States society, socially as well as economically. This thesis explains how contemporary marginalization is a product and a legacy of slavery. In three chapters, this thesis respectively deals with the history of black people in the United States, four concepts of race relations, and three institutions in which this marginalization is apparent. The legacy of slavery, namely institutional racism and white privilege, is still very clearly present in contemporary United States society. This affects the social and economic position of black Americans in a negative manner. To show how black Americans are still disproportionally hindered, this thesis analyzes the difference between black and white Americans in terms of housing, education, and welfare.
