| dc.description.abstract | The objective of this research has been to unpack why Moluccans in the Netherlands on average are in a less favourable social position. The role of structural factors will be examined as for their interplay with the (in)ability of Moluccans to challenge their less favourable social position. By looking at the interplay between structure and agency, the social position of the Moluccan community and its relationship with the Dutch government and society is being examined. The unique history of the Moluccan community and its relationship with the Dutch government and society, have long affected, and still do affect, the social position of Moluccans in the Netherlands. The starting position and intergenerational pain initiated in the 1950’s are the most telling examples of this. However, despite these structural factors, the community has also been able to put its social position on the social agenda. Today the main issue is to get clear what the concrete needs are from within the community to improve or simply embrace its social position. For this, dialogue and (trauma) healing is essential. The structural factor of being a scattered and diverse community complicates that process, but the potential of the community and its initiatives are promising. | |
