Abstract
As much as Ovid likes to play Dr. Love, he failed to warn me of the many side effects that come with writing a thesis on love and seduction. The strongest side effect turns out to be that you’ll find yourself reflecting on the many examples of love in your own life. Although my life tends to be heavier on love’s platonic flavours than on the spicy Ovidian kind, there’s still plenty of love for me to spread. Let’s get to it.
First and foremost, I am deeply indebted to my supervisor and tutor, prof. dr. Bé Breij. Bé, we did it again! Your thoroughness and wit made all the difference once more. In addition to supervising this thesis, you really went above and beyond for me over the past few years. I could easily write a Ciceronian speech on that subject, but for the sake of brevity, I’ll leave it at this: thank you for never losing faith in me. I never would have made it this far without you.
Second, I am very grateful to dr. Roald Dijkstra for his enthusiastic agreement to be my second reader. Roald, you are in for a wild ride—I’m looking forward to hearing your thoughts!
Insofar as I know anything about love, I learned it all from two teachers who could give Ovid a run for his money: my mother and sister. I truly wouldn’t know what to do without you. You’re the best.
I would now like to thank the following partners in crime for their support throughout the years:
Bas, my beautiful Brother, they say that the only two certainties in life are death and taxes. I’d like to add a third item to that list: our friendship. Thank you for sticking around no matter what. I am incredibly proud of you and who you have become. Here’s to many more years of Parallel Lives.
Janine, your infectious optimism and kindness have restored my faith in humanity more than once. I still haven’t figured out how you do it, but everything you touch seems to turn to gold. I can only hope I’ll get to share many more proverbial bags of popcorn with you.
Janis, it’s been an honour to face the many trials and tribulations of the ReMA™ together with you. Mira couldn’t get us down, the Milstein Room couldn’t get us down, and now, our theses won’t be able to either. I’d say we deserve to go on a fishing trip soon!
Pauline, ever since we met a few years ago, you’ve been an inspiration and an example to me. Most people could learn a thing or two from your no-nonsense approach to life and your unparalleled sense of justice. I’m sure the future has great things in store for you—and I’ll be right by your side to witness all of it.
Next, a shout-out to my colleagues at the Teaching Information Point is in order. Inge, Kees and Maarten, I’m really glad I got the opportunity to work with you—you’re all amazing company and you’ve made this whole writing process much more bearable.
Finally, I would like to take a brief moment in memory of prof. dr. Marc van der Poel. Let it be known to each and every reader of this thesis that Marc’s influence on me runs throughout every word you’re about to read. I hope it shows.
With love,
