Abstract
Over the last decades the cities in the Netherlands have been growing their concrete jungle with new developments still to come. Biodiversity in cities is declining and species are going extinct. Nowadays, citizens are more aware of their green surroundings. Different municipalities cooperate with each other to create policy for nature in cities. This thesis is aimed at urban green spaces and biodiversity in the city of Nijmegen. The main research question that is investigated is: To what extent do urban green spaces contribute in maintaining and conserving biodiversity in the city of Nijmegen? In order to answer this question, policy documents from the municipality of Nijmegen have been analyzed, observations were done and interviews with experts have been held. Urban green spaces contribute considerably to the maintenance and conservation of biodiversity. Needs have been found in three categories which can be invested to further enhance biodiversity: flora, fauna and human behaviour. The results can be summarized by stating that variation in urban green spaces is the factor that came forward as most important for both flora and fauna. Furthermore, integration of nature in urban developments in Nijmegen is a process that creates progress for biodiversity in the city.
