Abstract
“Plain and simple doesn’t get the house sold,” is what real estate agent Christine Quinn, star of Netflix reality series Selling Sunset, says to the camera before organising an open house where the guests can get injected with Botox on the spot (“Back to Business” -17:30). This scene is exemplary for the world of Selling Sunset, where women do everything in their power to maintain personal success. While the series takes place in Los Angeles, a city with a homeless population of over 60,000 each night, Selling Sunset shows only the glamorous side of the West Coast city (von Wachter et al. 4). The women featured in the series work as real estate agents and also show how they spend their earned commissions on dinners, high-end clothing, and big cars. This thesis delves into the lifestyle seen in Selling Sunset, and discover if it is as perfect as it seems.
