dc.description.abstractThis research explores the relationship between business information system (BIS) design and reliability and how is reliability subsequently developed through highly reliable practices. BIS failures have large effects on modern society and there is little knowledge available to make reliable BIS operations possible. We build on existing reliability and accident theories NAT and HRO to explore to what extend these apply to BIS and their effect. Data is collected using expert interviews in different organizational contexts. Based on the analysis we hypothesize that complex interactions and tight coupling have a negative influence on BIS reliability. Secondly, we hypothesize that HRO practices negatively influence the direct relation of complex interactions and tight coupling on the reliability of a BIS. These hypotheses can be used as early indicators for practice and we call on future research to validate these hypotheses at larger scale.en_US
