From insularity to integration: Understanding genuine interdisciplinarity in economics

| dc.description.abstract | This thesis investigates how genuine interdisciplinarity, or a lack thereof, can impact the approach of economists in their research. Economics is known to be an extraordinarily insular science within the landscape of social sciences, as demonstrated by research that investigates interdisciplinary citation patterns. However, these patterns reveal little about the actual content of interdisciplinarity. To address this, this thesis sets up an analytical framework, primarily based on Uskali Mäki’s work on interdisciplinary constraints, that is then applied to analyse a variety of categories of criticisms that are often directed at economists engaging in interdisciplinarity and how their approach can affect their research. This application will then form the theoretical framework of the cycle of lack of genuine interdisciplinarity of economists, which will be used to analyse criticisms regarding a case study, the ‘Out Of Africa’ Hypothesis by Quamrul Ashraf and Oded Galor. In this case study analysis, these criticisms shall be put into the context of these common trends of the theoretical framework. The findings suggest that these specific criticisms can largely, though not entirely, be attributed to a lack of genuine interdisciplinarity, reflecting larger trends in criticisms regarding economic research. | |
