Abstract

The Ernems city dialect is an endangered languoid variety, which has barely been studied by linguists and whose status within the city of Arnhem is rather unknown. This study has investigated the contemporary usage and status of the Ernems dialect, comparing its usage in the linguistic landscape of Arnhem city centre and the neighbourhood of Klarendal, the supposed heart of dialect usage in the city. Here, it was noted that Ernems is barely preserved in writing, even in Klarendal, with speakers also difficult to recognise. This was then compared to Ernems usage at Vitesse Arnhem football club, which showed that more active, dynamic, and noticeable dialect usage occurred within this communicative context. This highlights a unique scenario where Ernems usage is normalised, which could offer important context to future preservation strategies, as well as highlight the importance of certain identities within the Ernems speech community that link directly to Vitesse.
