Abstract

This thesis explores the issues of truthfulness and genre in Holocaust literature, particularly in light of the Wilkomirski affair, during which a book published as a memoir 1995 was discovered to be fake. The affair unfolded in the late 1990s and came to a conclusion around 2001, and sparked controversies and intense debates among scholars and in the media. The first two chapters of this thesis explore issues of truthfulness and genre explored by analysing six well-known books, written by both survivors of the concentration camps and people who had no prior connection to the Holocaust. The third chapter applies and reconsiders these issues in light of the Wilkomirski affair. Keywords: Holocaust literature, Wilkomirski, truthfulness, genre
