Abstract
In this research, the effects of cultural basic assumptions on employee empowerment were researched. This was done in the context of a change in the working methods of a part of the [redacted] of the [redacted]. The qualitative abductive method used 17 semi-structured interviews with vignettes to explore existing literature while filling gaps experienced in practice. Results showed that basic assumptions surrounding control mechanisms influenced the impact employees could have on their work. Assumptions surrounding perspectives on employees influenced the self-determination employees experienced. Lastly, basic assumptions surrounding information sharing and collaboration influenced the experienced meaningfulness of the work as well as feelings of competence. Future research should broaden the scope of respondents to include actors from higher in the hierarchy that inevitably influence basic assumptions and flexibility lower in the organisation, as well as the organisational structure that can have similar effects. Further attention should also be paid to basic assumptions related to employees' willingness to change of employees, as this can impact the way changes are approached.
