Abstract

In the Netherlands, educational quality in primary school is currently assessed based on students’ test scores at the final exam at the end of their primary school period. However, there are several other, more qualitative, aspects that are important in the development of children. To investigate these aspects and their interrelationships, Group Model Building is applied with participants working in primary schools. Results of this study comprehensively display these qualitative aspects in causal loop diagrams, providing information regarding which aspects influence child development and the interrelationships between these aspects. The findings of this study suggest that there are several qualitative aspects that are important in the development of children, which are currently not taken into account in the assessment of educational quality. Future research should focus on identifying indicators of these qualitative aspects, to be able to incorporate these aspects in the assessment of educational quality.
