In this exploratory study, the focus is on the book choices and reading progress of upper-level pre-university (vwo) students. The first part of this study involves a survey that provides an overview of the types of readers the respondents are and how they make their book choices. The findings revealed that students with different personas found different factors important. The second part of the study involves a reading logbook that was administered in two fifth-year vwo classes. The aim of this reading logbook was to gain insight into the reading progress of fifth-year vwo students. The results indicated that students read little outside of school and do not always use the time they are given to read at school effectively. It also emerged that students often read their school-assigned books at home.
