dc.description.abstract | This paper is about the representation of power during the reign of king Henry VII (r. 1485 – 1509) of England. After returning from his exile in Brittany, Henry took the throne from the former king Richard III (d. 1485), thereby ending the Wars of the Roses (1455-1487). Throughout his reign Henry was threatened by numerous revolts, which subsided at the end of the fifteenth century. Around this time wedding preparations for his eldest son Arthur came to an end. Arthur was to marry the Spanish princess Catherine of Aragon, the later wife of king Henry VII (r. 1509-1547). The main focus of this paper is the use of symbolism during the wedding and surrounding festivities. For this the manuscript text ‘The receyt of the ladie Katheryne’ (c. 1502) has been used, edited by Gordon Kipling (Oxford, 1990). Another point of interest will be the position of the medieval author. | en_US |
