Abstract
This thesis delves deeper into the effect of residential insecurity on the subjective well-being (SWB) of international students in the context of the Dutch housing crisis. By using the Multi-Stakeholder Partnership (MSP) approach, it addresses why and how residential insecurity affects the international students differently from Dutch students and proposes organizational strategies to mitigate its negative effects. The thesis unveils that international students face significant obstacles in finding housing, which are exacerbated by intercultural and language barriers, financial constraints, and time-consuming processes. These challenges lead to higher levels of stress, anxiety and diminished SWB among international students compared to their Dutch counterparts. The perspectives of diverse stakeholders are incorporated, including the students, Radboud housing team, SSHN (Stichting Student Huisvesting Nijmegen), and the ministry of Dutch affairs, which, consequently, developed two strategies: awareness and expectation management. The awareness strategy entails the fostering of social cohesion between Dutch and international students, while expectation management encompasses transparent communication about the housing market realities and availability of support services. The thesis contributes to the literature by providing a comprehensive understanding of residential insecurity’s difficulties and by offering practical solutions for addressing this issue. It also sheds light on the need for further research, including longitudinal studies, an exploration of alternative strategies, and to enhance support for international students in the Netherlands.
