Abstract
In this research paper, I will argue that Barbie has more feminist elements that generally
acknowledged, which results in a more nuanced and complex perception of Barbie than the
one that is often presented by feminists. Barbie has been villainised by a large group of
people, including feminists. In this research paper, arguments will be presented which show
that this villainization is not justified, by analysing both primary sources, including an
analysis of Barbie’s movies with a focus on the presentation of female characters, its
storytelling, and specific elements of the Barbie Doll itself, and secondary sources, which
consist of articles regarding feminist and postfeminist responses to barbie. The study includes:
a history on Barbie, a movie analysis, and a comparison to Disney and fairy tales.
