Abstract
This thesis aims to showcase how Taylor Swift utilized her music and songwriting as a tool of political influence by means of analyzing several of her songs including “The Man”, “You Need to Calm Down”, and “the last great american dynasty”. The concept of political (popular) music will be introduced as a historical framework, after which Swift’s music and her place within the sphere of political music will be scrutinized. Feminist theory, queer theory, and Marxist-related concepts will be used to analyze the presence of political themes in Swift’s discography. The thesis aims to showcase the impact of Swift’s political music by considering it in relation to Swift’s place in the larger discourse of American politics.
