The goal of this study was to answer the following research question: How does a board member experience the process of being faced with investor activism, and what does this process look like from their perspective? By answering this till now neglected perspective in the literature, this research aims to add to the literature on shareholder activism and corporate governance. To research this question, a qualitative approach was used in combination with the use of vignettes. In the end this research mapped out the process of shareholder activism and found that the quality of the arguments, the level of aggression and the willingness negotiate a compromise all impacted the reaction of the board when faced with shareholder activism.
