Abstract
This thesis is a literary study of the use of magic in Roman poetry in the early principate, to see if these elements will occur in the same way in Shakespeare's Macbeth. The Roman case studies will be Horace, Ovid and Seneca. In this case-study the focus lies on three themes, namely witchcrafts, ghosts and prophecy.
