Abstract

This thesis examines the impact of the use of genocidal rape on women in terms of loss of marriage potential, social outcast, children of bad memories and HIV. Looking separately at the concept of empowerment. Focusing on the discrepancies between the intended consequences of genocidal rape and the actual outcomes. In order to assess these discrepancies, the testimonies of 88 women were analyzed. The discrepancies were found between the degree of social outcast and the differences in social status. The analysis suggests that fewer women than expected were socially outcast as a result of sexual violence. This research also found differences in the impact of marriage potential, forced marriage and empowerment between former virgins and married women. This research contributes to understanding the complex aftermath of genocidal rape and its impact on Rwandan women.
