This study focused primarily on the organizing and operational principles of fast-growing start-up compared to traditional organizations. The research question was therefore “What are the organizing and operational characteristics of fast-growing start-ups in comparison to traditional organizations in the Netherlands”. Based on qualitative research, it was discovered that fast-growing start-ups relatively to their traditional counterparts utilize new technologies such as Slack, work with modern human resource practices, and focus on primarily hiring committed employees that share the vision of the start-up. Contrary to what the literature established, it was discovered that traditional organizations have begun to adapt to these technologies and insights, but at a lesser pace. Finally, smartphone technologies were found to play an important role in the growth of start-ups.
