dc.description.abstractThis master thesis aims to gather insights in the relationship between the concepts of trust and governance in the context of educational public-private partnerships (PPPs). This relationship between trust and governance can either be explained as a complementary relationship, in which high levels of trust lead to better governance structures and vice versa, or a substitutionary relationship, in which there is no need for governance structures to inhibit opportunistic behaviour due to high levels of trust and vice versa in which high levels of trust are unnecessary due to the good governance structures. The research question focuses on which of these relationships exists in the context of educational PPPs. To answer this question, a deductive, qualitative multiple-case study investigating three different educational PPPs was carried out, using three dimensions of trust (mutual dependency, competence and benevolence) and two dimensions of governance (contractual and relational governance). Results show conclusive evidence for the existence of a complementary relationship between the concepts of trust and governance. This knowledge can be used to contribute to filling a clearly identified gap in knowledge as well as to definitively choose which recommendations to give to educational PPPs to build more trust and better governance structures.en_US
