Abstract

The use of images designed to evoke negative emotions, such as fear, is intended to promote individuals to adopt new behaviors (Hoeken & Geurts, 2005). According to Hoeken and Geurts (2005), the consequences depicted must be both realistic and undesirable enough to motivate behavior change. The present study aimed at answering the question “What is the effect of nicotine dependence on perceived persuasive intent of the Dutch tobacco cigarette packaging when presented with images representative of consequences of smoking towards one’s own body versus images representative of consequences that smoking has on others?” with the use of the Extended Parallel Processing Model (EPPM). Results show that there was no overall significance between types of images on the perceived persuasive intent.
